Remember Poem Verses

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

About the poem

The poem "Remember" by Christina Rossetti is about the speaker's desire to be remembered after they have passed away. The speaker asks the reader to remember them after they have gone "away into the silent land," when the reader can no longer hold them by the hand or see them. The poem acknowledges that it may be difficult to remember the speaker once they have been gone for some time, but urges the reader not to grieve if they forget for a while, but rather to smile if they later remember. The poem suggests that forgetting and moving on can be better than dwelling on loss and sadness. The poem expresses a desire for memory to serve as a way to keep the speaker's spirit alive even after death.

The Structure of Poem

The poem consists of three stanzas, each comprising four lines. The rhyme scheme is ABBA, and the poem is written in iambic pentameter. The speaker asks to be remembered after they are gone, and acknowledges that there may come a time when they are forgotten. The poem explores the idea that it is better to forget and be happy than to remember and be sad.
